Wild Onions

All of my life I knew Illinois meant wild onion.  I always marked the moment by when we would smell the wild onions on the southside.  We would take the Bishop Ford and smell them somewhere near the landfills.

I don’t smell those wild onions anymore.

People now say Illinois means wild leek.

I have never seen wild leeks, though.

Anyhow, my son and I recently took a camping trip in Michigan on the other side of the lake.  My son found tons of wild onions.  We also found raspberries, mushrooms, garlic, milkweed, and nettles.  My son swears he is a hunter.  I was like, “go catch a wild turkey”.

He came back with turkey feathers. And I got my first sting, by a wasp 🙂

There was a stage and we did performances.  I wrote a song and sang it.  Here it is.

Lost and Found
Looking for wild raspberries

and I found a couple mushrooms

walking in the woods

walking in the woods

crunchy things and wooden swings

in the trees

so I follow the line

that I don’t have to cross

and  I see the bees and buzzing things

and so I was looking for something

and this is what I found

there’s some things that I have lost

and some are still around

looking for wild mint leaves

but instead I found some milkweed

on the trail

on the trail

crunchy things and wooden swings

in the trees

so I follow the line I don’t have to cross

and I see the bees

and buzzing things

and so I was looking for something

and this is what I’ve found

there’s some things that I have lost

and some that are still around

in the tall grass

sitting down

and we all pass

the food around

and we’re buzzing with the bees

in the frequencies of ohms

they say “welcome”

I say “I am home”

crunchy things and wooden swings

In the trees

So I follow the line I don’t have to cross

and I see the bees

and buzzing things

and so I was looking for something

and this is what I’ve found

there’s some things that I have lost

and some that are still around

Looking for the paw paw trees

but instead I found a rainbow

make a camp

make a camp

crunchy things and wooden swings

In the trees

So I follow the line I don’t have to cross

and I see the bees

and buzzing things

and so I was looking for something

and this is what I’ve found

there’s some things that I have lost

and some that are still around
