My parents grew up a block away from each other and I always got a chance to see both sets of my grandparents. When I moved in with my dad and stepmother we would either come up by the interstate or we would simply ride straight up Halsted Street. On Papi’s side we’d head to Saint Helena’s for church on Sunday morning and on Pawpaw’s side we would go to church at Trinity. By Joy Lynn Clark 06/17/2024 I wrote this song sixteen years ago as I was watching the tale of the “infamous” Burr Oak Cemetary scandal https://daisyfriday.net/burr-oak-on-the-colored-side/ unfold on the local Chicago news. I still had not known that I had ancestors buried there but I was asking around. As I heard the story, my mind drifted off about vampires, zombies, and grave robbers. Things is part of a larger work that I was going to make a, “rock opera”. I never managed to finish it but, there are a few more tunes. I also arranged the original duet to a solo. I had gone there right when I first arrived in Lexington to see a cool jazz band in the past. This time however the place was packed with colored folks as well as what I normally encounter in Lexington.
